The Skotnes in Tokai scooped an award at the 2018 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries Awards as a highly commended bistro eatery. It was among 15 locally recognised eateries that were announced in Cape Town on Thursday 18 October after a year-long voting period and adjudication process.

Executive chef Phil de Villiers says they are thrilled with the recognition, hoping it is the first of many. Their success means more support for the non-profit organisation that is basically the mother body of the eatery. “The restaurant is part of the Norval Foundation, which is a non-for-profit centre for art and cultural expression. In that way, the [eatery] itself is a community initiative, because anyone who supports us is also supporting the arts in South Africa. We have always strived to create food that responds to its environment, and works closely with our small-batch farmers and suppliers.”

Named after legendary South African artist and teacher Cecil Skotnes, the restaurant is “naturally at home in the world of art”.They serve local cuisine, using flavours and distilling the ingredients to their simplest possible presentation.

“All ingredients are sourced from local small-batch suppliers, with the intention of supporting and uplifting local communities,” says de Villiers.

Linda Scarborough, editor of Eat Out, says this year the easy-to-use Eat Out app made reviewing easy. “The top eateries in each category were in conjunction with scoring from professional Eat Out critics, determined by public ratings received via the Eat Out app and website (eatout.co.za). We love reading about users’ dining experiences, and look to their star ratings to determine the shortlist.”
