New faces will be filling ward councillors seats following the local government elections.

One of these new faces will be newly elected ward 64 councillor, Aimee Kuhl.

She will join re-elected councillors Felicity Purchase (ward 69) and Simon Liell-Cock (ward 61).

Kuhl became active in campus politics during her undergraduate studies overseas. “When returning to South Africa for my Master’s degree, I started volunteering at orphanages and safety houses in Khayelitsha. This is where I realised that I needed to become part of something bigger to drive issues important to me such as gender equality,” she says.

Over the past six years, Kuhl has worked in various roles in the NGO sector and as a consultant on community development for the Department of Transport and Public Works.

“We have a long way to go as a country to redress past inequalities. The legacy of apartheid is felt the most at a grassroots level, where service delivery, access to quality education and healthcare differ greatly in our divided communities. I feel local government is the space in which we can best work towards creating a better future for all South Africans.”

During her term, Kuhl hopes to support local businesses to in drawing visitors to the peninsula.

“The deep south has the unique opportunity to attract local and international visitors. I understand that supporting an enabling economic environment for businesses to grow helps these to provide employment for the migrant labour coming into the area, which in turn reduces crime and other social ills. We need to work together to address the issues in ward 64 and to improve the quality of life for all our constituents.”
