New facility for mental health patients opened

In an effort to provide and facilitate comprehensive, proactive mental health services in the Western Cape, Cape Mental Health opened and officially launched Fountain House Mitchell’s Plain in Dagbreek Avenue on Thursday.

The rehabilitation centre, which operates from Monday to Friday will provide comprehensive vocational training and skills development to people with psychosocial disability, in line with the Health Care 2030 strategy.

It will also be centered around the reorientation of the health system toward person-centered care and providing opportunities for more community-based

The aim is to facilitate and enhance persons with psychosocial disability, to become reintegrated into society and the work place.

The programme offers opportunities for meaningful engagement, and empowers service-users by encouraging active decision making, partnered with capacity building that develops self-confidence.Celebrating a milestone

Dr Ingrid Daniels, director of Cape Mental Health and president elect of the World Federation for Mental Health, said that the launch marks a momentous milestone for the organisation and its strategic efforts to provide the essential services needed in communities.

“Together with the Western Cape Department of Health, spearheaded by the Klipfontein/Mitchell’s Plain Substructure, we are incredibly proud to host this launch,” she said.

“This rehabilitation service will be able to meet the needs of those most vulnerable, and serves as a testament to our continued efforts for further inclusion of those with mental disability who have been left behind by society.”

Patti Olkers, director of the Western Cape Government: Health, Klipfontein and Mitchell’s Plain area, said: “The opening of Fountain House confirms the department’s partnership and commitment to strengthen mental health care access in the community, and to create a more preventative environment and participatory society in line with our Health Care 2030 strategy, ultimately making a difference in the lives of those diagnosed with mental health disorders and their families.”

A service user who has been with the programme for over eight months, had this to say about her time at Fountain House Mitchell’s Plain: “Fountain House means a lot to me, because it keeps me busy and it keeps my mind busy.

“I had nothing to do at home before I joined Fountain House and I am learning a lot here.”
