A total of 49 members were officially inducted into the Lions Club at their official charter dinner held this past weekend.

Dressed to the nines, members and guests alike attended to witness the official induction of members into the international Lions Club.

The Mitchell’s Plain club is the newest and 44th club in Cape Town since Lions Club International was introduced to South Africa in 1957.

The organisation also celebrated its 100th anniversary in June this year.

Lions Club International has member clubs in 211 countries and is the largest of all the service organisations with its headquarters being in Oakbrook in the United States.

The Mitchell’s Plain club was officially initiated in September (“Plain gets newest branch of Lions Club”, People’s Post, 12 September).

The objectives of the organisation are to create and foster a spirit of understanding amongst most people of the world, promote the principles of good government and good citizenship, take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community, unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, and good fellowship and mutual understanding.

The organisation also provides a forum for open discussion on all matters of public interest, although partisan politics and sectarian religion will not be debated by club members. It encourages service-minded people to serve their communities without personal financial reward and encourages efficiency and promotes high ethical standards in business, professions, public works and private endeavours.
