Children in Vrygrond can enjoy a brand-new park.

The City of Cape Town has recently completed the second phase of the new park, which has been named Drury Road Park.

Belinda Walker, mayoral committee member for community services and special projects, says ward allocation funding was used for this phase costing R50 000. R300 000 was spent on the first phase, with a third phase still to be completed.

The site in Drury Road was previously a dumping hotspot. It now features a water point, rubber play courts for five-a-side soccer or netball games, a large wooden jungle gym, a slide, a joy wheel, an igloo, a whirling platform, a see-saw, park benches and fencing on the perimeter.

“Vandalism and dumping remain two of the City’s biggest challenges, so I urge our communities to take ownership of this park. The rejuvenation of community spaces is critical to the upliftment of any area,” Walker says, adding that “recreational spaces encourage our residents to meet and engage with one another, to build communities and to enjoy active leisure time together”.
