Christ the Mediator Anglican Church in Portlands welcomed four newly ranked members to their Church Lads’ and Girls’ Brigade.

The members were ranked during the morning service at the church on Sunday 5 August.

Elaine van Schalkwyk was ranked as company sergeant while Kayla van Schalkwyk, Charlize Cloete and Matthew Johnson were ranked as corporals.

“The Brigade as a whole was initially started in Fulham, England on Wednesday 11 November 1891; the South African Brigade was formed on Thursday 6 September 1894. The Company of Christ the Mediator, Portlands had been established in the first year of the Parish’s existence, which is 1981. The Company went dormant for a few years in the mid-2000s, but was reestablished in 2010. Currently, our Company membership sits at 82,” says Dale Aries of the church.

The brigade operates with four rank class levels.

“Ranks are given based on very careful consideration and prayer by the Company Chaplain, Father Dean Apples; members are nominated by the Company’s leadership and identified for promotion based on their commitment to the Company over a lengthy period of time, their eagerness shown that they would like to lead and take responsibility and maintain discipline among their fellow members,” says Aries.

“One’s proficiency in a particular skill is also taken into consideration that is in alignment to some of the ranks within the Company structure. For example to become a Sergeant drummer, the person must be well able to play the drum and know certain rudiments.”
