New road to lower traffic volumes

The V&A Waterfront will be converting the Dock Road traffic circle (opposite the Caltex petrol station) into a traffic intersection to improve future traffic flow between South Arm and Dock roads.

This will allow improved traffic control during peak hours as the new traffic lights can be prioritised to accommodate incoming or outgoing traffic, says Waterfront spokesperson Donald Kau.

“Although construction of the new plaza and intersection will take time, the project is an effort by the V&A Waterfront to enhance and upgrade the property’s infrastructure to better handle and manage traffic volumes within its land precincts as a result of the wider Cape Town CBD traffic congestion challenges,” he says.

“The project has also been designed to improve pedestrian and bicycle access to and from the CBD along our new canal edge walkways and (soon to be completed) Battery Park.”

Construction is already underway and is expected to increase next month.

The project is expected to be completed at the end of November.

“We anticipate minimal disruption to traffic during peak hours as the usual two lanes will remain open during these times.

“One lane around the current traffic circle will however be closed during off-peak hours,” says Kau.

Peak times run from 06:00 to 09:00 and 15:30 to 19:00 on weekdays.

Unavoidable noise-producing construction work will take place from 07:00 to 21:00, Mondays to Saturdays.
