The Manenberg Police station adopted an interesting approach to crime awareness, which has been introduced to the learners of Manenberg this first term of the year.

Manenberg police spokesperson Captain Ian Bennett says the station has created an integrated approach of self awareness ensuring that learners and youth can make good choices.

“Our youth are faced with somewhat difficult choices if not impossible. We would like to prepare them in taking choices from saying no to substance abuse right to stop drop and roll when faced with a situation of fires at home,” says Bennett.

Bennett points out the several fires which have destroyed homes and left families destitute.

“Often it has been set alight by children playing with matches. Through this programme, we hope to educate children and adults around the dangers of playing with matches. The importance of staying away from substance abuse and not getting involved with gangs,” adds Bennett.

He explains that the crime safety awareness programme comprises of the police, fire rescue safety, Metro police K9 unit and mounted unit.

“We found that we need to compound crime awareness safety within the schools as the children are equally compounded by gangs and their devious gang recruitment,” Bennett says.

He says the children have received the programme with great enthusiasm as the children get to interact with law enforcement officers and experience the therapy of being around animals. He adds it has become important to ensure that children know that every law enforcement officer is a friend.

“Law Enforcement is here to inspire young people. Policing a nation starts with every person that has self-respect and appreciates the dignity and rights of others. Management and staff of Manenberg Police Station have committed themselves in combating crime from every angle and will not give up in combating the scourge of gangs and the violence it brings with it. Every child has rights and the police and every other law enforcement agency is here to protect their rights.”
