New turn for taxis

Plans to develop a new taxi rank in Masiphumelele are back on track, following an appeal against the proposal.

The new taxi rank aims to create a “safe and dignified area” for waiting commuters on land directly across from the existing informal taxi rank (“Safer interchange on the cards”, People’s Post, 17 May).

The proposal will see the development not only of the taxi rank, but also civil infrastructure, an admin building where operators and management can have meetings, stormwater drains, non-motorised transport infrastructure such as wheelchair-friendly walking lanes, as well as landscaping.

Construction was expected to start this month, but the appeal against the rezoning of the property has delayed this, explains subcouncil chairperson Felicity Purchase.

The appeal was lodged by the Abathembu Western Cape Traditional Royal Council and disputed the need to create a new taxi rank, as opposed to upgrading the current one. The council claimed that local taxi associations had not been consulted.

The appeal was overturned, says Purchase, with local taxi associations confirming they had been consulted and supported the proposal. The planning process “can now move forward” alongside the design and tender process, Purchase says.

Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport, previously told People’s Post the new taxi rank will cater for four taxi routes operating to Fish Hoek, Kommetjie, Simon’s Town and Noordhoek, and will accommodate 60 minibus taxis.

Taxi operators currently work from a vacant erf with no services or facilities to commuters, who are “exposed to the elements” and the area “poses a safety and security risk”, he says.
