Various roads in and around Ottery have been earmarked for upgrades in the coming weeks.

“We went through the progressive capital expenditure report and for ward 66 we made funds available for upgrades,” confirms ward 66 councillor William Akim.

Sidewalks for pedestrian traffic will be constructed along Eric Way as well as Gerard and Frank roads, which run perpendicular to Eric Way, which runs parallel to the Big Lotus canal.

The roads have never had sidewalks before, which meant that pedestrians would often have to walk into oncoming traffic.

“I had a site visit with the officials from the City’s Transport and Urban Development Authority (TDA). They gave the thumbs up to say that from a safety point of view it is a lot of traffic and pedestrians who are using that road and there are no sidewalks for residents to walk on. Because the canal is there, then they had to walk in the road, which is a bit unsafe for them,” says Akim.

Construction will start on Monday 8 October and will not see any of the roads widened, but they will all be resurfaced.

“What I have asked them is to take a ‘before’ picture how it looks like now and an ‘after’ picture of what it is going to look like. When we were at the site visit, from the residents who came forward, from the remarks that were made, is that something is finally being done by constructing footways down this road. We have the buy-in from the residents down this road. They also said that the youngsters can now walk down the pavement and there is sufficient lighting down this road,” Akim says.

Roads on the other side of the canal have also been identified for resurfacing, which may pose minor disruptions in the area.

“The other positive that we also discussed is that the following roads off De Wet Road – we’ve got Anderson, Melville, Topaz, Teal and Kirk roads – all of them will be resurfaced and will also start, weather permitting, on Monday 8 October. There will be some disruption down that road, but they are all side roads. Because the complaint that we received from those residents is that there are a lot of potholes. We decided that we will do all roads as a result.”
