After realising their overgrown yard was becoming a hiding place for drug users, congregants of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church and two neighbourhood watches decided to take action.

On Saturday 24 August members of the Sonneblom Street and Parktown neighbourhood watches joined members of the congregation to clean the yard and trim the trees.

June Henkeman, a member of the congregation and a community activist, says the two groups work in the community of Bridgetown. While a lack of resources is a constant problem, they work tirelessly to protect the community and reduce crime.

She says when they noticed the overgrown grass and trees they offered to cut them. She passed on the message to the church’s pastor, Aloysius Abone, who gladly gave them the go-ahead.

“There was also an old bench under the trees where the criminals used to sleep,” Henkeman explains.

According to Henkeman, the groups would like to help other families too, to safeguard their properties by cutting overgrown grass and trimming the trees.

They can’t do that efficiently though, since they do not have enough tree cutting tools.

They do not have first aid kits they can use when the need arises. They are also in need of torches.

There’s no hiding place anymore for criminals and drug users now that the Bridgetown church’s yard has been cleaned up.

“There is no hiding place for them anymore. We trimmed the church so beautifully,” she says.

She says when the congregation met again at the church, they were thrilled and immediately saw the difference.

The church’s pastor is currently in Nigeria and couldn’t be reached for comment.
