Following last week’s article in People’s Post (“Zachary aims to inspire”, 02 February), a Salt River businessman has made a generous shoe donation to young Zachary Arendse.

Spiros Mavraganis of Atlas Factory Outlet contacted People’s Post early on Wednesday 20 February requesting that he be connected with Zachary because he wanted to sponsor him with a pair of running shoes.

On arrival at Mavraganis’ sportswear shop in Albert Road, Zachary was told how Mavraganis and his wife had been touched by Zachary’s story and wanted to do something.

“We are so generous in the community. We always give back to the needy, but his story is one that has never come up before,” said Mavraganis.

He told Zachary that he is an inspiration to many young people and should never stop doing what he loves.“Young people always want somebody to believe in them. My wife and I were moved by your high aspirations. Youngsters need to aspire to do great.”

Mavraganis donated two pairs of Erke shoes – one for running and another for casual wear. He also supplied the young man with T-shirts, socks and a cap to train in.

“Erke is an international sportswear brand that has sponsored many a sportsman. And Zachary’s aspirations to become an Olympian were admirable. We thought we should gift him with shoes from a brand that has sponsored many great sportsmen and teams,” said Mavraganis

Lost for words, all Zachary could do was give thanks to Mavraganis and his wife.

“I feel happy to know that there are people who have never met me, but still believe in me,” he said.

Zachary also said that he would not have been able to do all this without his coach who has been with him from the beginning.

“Coach Van Roodt has been pushing me and motivating me to do my best and do better. I will forever be grateful to him for that.”

In support of Zachary, Mavraganis will give a pair of Erke shoes to anyone who can correctly guess Zachary’s time on his next race. Whoever get the closest to the actual time will win the prize.V For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/ERKESA/
