LETTER: No objections to mosque

2016-03-22 06:00

The Nurul I’baad Islamic Society is an elected representative body of more than 90% of Muslims resident in The Westridge and Rocklands.

Since 2001 the land for the mosque and church was known to all who moved into the area. The Nurul I’baad Islamic Society was established in 2003 by the residents of this area with its primary mandate to acquire and build a mosque in this area. The Nurul I’baad Islamic Society regularly consults its congregants with news and information about the development of the mosque.

No Muslim from this area has ever objected to or brought their reservations to our attention with regards to the building of a mosque in our community.

The author of the letter “You did not consult us on mosque” that was published in People’s Post of 15 March makes the assertion that the mosque will contribute to further dangers to the community. This, Sir, is what drives Islamophobia. I’m not exactly sure what you are alluding to with “case in point” as if “mosquegoers” are responsible for the crimes committed.

If you are unfamiliar with the coming and going of mosquegoers, perhaps it is necessary to enlighten you that mosques throughout the world, including South Africa, have always welcomed passersby or people from other areas. No local community Muslims have ever barred or denied other Muslims from using the services of the mosque.

The Nurul I’baad Islamic Society has never been ignorant of or ignored the interest of the community of The Westridge or Rocklands. Hence, we call on those community members who feel aggrieved to contact us so that we can try to clarify any misunderstanding. It is in our broader interest to work in harmony with other organisations that has the common interest of the whole community at heart.
