Mayor Dan Plato was among men who joined a 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children event hosted by the Western Cape Women’s Shelter Movement (WCWSM) at the Company’s Garden on Wednesday 28 November.

This marked the fourth anniversary of the WCWSM’s “The only thing you beat is a drum” campaign held as part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign. The organisation is made up of 15 women who represent shelters across Cape Town.

According to his spokesperson, Greg Wagner, Plato is continuing his stance of speaking out against all types of “evils in our society as and where required to”.

The event also promoted “A Polished Man”, which invited men to show support by painting one of their fingernails.

The example was set by Vula Youth led by Peter Schaupp. The crew did drum beating, which aligned with the theme.

Another male-led organisation showing support was Youth Africa Solutions. Its founder, John Philmon, says there is a lot that needs to be done to encourage men to take part in such initiatives.

“There is still a need to raise awareness and get men involved. Numbers at the event were not so impressive and gender violence continues to be an epidemic in our communities”

Philmon says his Zonnebloem-based organisation works with many women with a past history of abuse who ended up on the streets before finding a home at Youth Africa Solutions.

He says abuse affects victims in many ways and it is better to prevent abuse than deal with its consequences.

Philmon called on men to protect women and children and to support initiatives acting against gender-based violence.

Delene Roberts, WCWSM executive member, says support for the event is growing.

“We have greater support and it makes the women in our care realise to what limit the staff is prepared to go to make a change. There are quite a few committed men that participate every year and when men pass by, a staff member would engage them, and we find that they are eager to support our ‘Polished Man’ campaign by having one fingernail painted. By having one nail painted, the male is supporting our cry to end violence against women and children.”
