Ocean View residents took a stand against substance abuse last week.

The events, organised by the local Dutch Reformed Church’s English Christian Dependency Ministry Group with organisations such as Breaking Barriers, the Police Museum in Muizenberg and City of Cape Town disaster management and social development officials in Fish Hoek, saw residents coming together for a “koffiekroeg” and games evening on Friday 3 November. This was followed the next day by a peace walk led by the local Fresh Start Cycling Club and the New Guiding Stars Band. Various educational exhibition tables were set up at the church hall.

The focus of the event was to make youth from Ocean View aware of social ills such as gangsterism and drug and alcohol abuse and to empower them with resource material and pamphlets.

Rev JZ Coetzee encouraged the youngsters who attended the event.

A candle was also lit in memory of all those who have died in shootings in Ocean View.
