“We would like to remind the public that we are not the enemy, we are here to help,” says acting station commander, Captain Edgar Jones, from Kirstenhof Police Station.

He was speaking after a 32-year-old officer was shot at Steenvilla in Military Road on Wednesday 11 July between 08:00 and 09:00. The officer was reportedly attending a crime scene when he was allegedly shot twice by suspects involved in the robbery incident he was attending.

According to Jones, the officer was shot in the stomach and eye and is recovering well at a local hospital. “I believe he will be discharged today, he is doing very well but he will not be returning to work anytime soon.”

Jones says this was a traumatic incident for the station, and officers have received counselling. He says it is the first time the station is dealing with this kind of incident.

He says they are just law enforcers doing their jobs and are not public enemies. No arrest has been made as yet, and a case of attempted murder is being investigated.

BKM Neighbourhood Watch conveyed a message of support to the injured officer, the station, his family and friends, wishing him a speedy recovery.
