Men and women from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) who have been serving for long periods of time were awarded medals during a parade at Martello Sports Field, Simon’s Town Naval Bas eon Friday.

The parade saw men and women who have served selflessly for 30 and 40 years being awarded. The good service medals were awarded to more than 200 members of the SA Army, SA Air Force, SA Navy and SA Military Health Service.

These medals are awarded as a token of appreciation to members who have served with loyalty and dedication in their execution of the SANDF mandate.

The chief of staff to the chief of the South African National Defence Force, Lieutenant-General Vusumuzi Masondo, conferred various service medals on behalf of the chief of the South African National Defence Force, General Solly Shoke.

Those on parade and attending the event were reminded to do good at all times no matter the consequences.

The day, attended by family and friends, is an annual event to thank and acknowledge those who have put so much into the work they do.

Sub-Lieutenant Lizzy Hange says the day was beautiful, as evident from the smile on everyone’s faces.

“Seeing people that have served in their different departments being given the medals is very heart-warming. The parade is always something special done across the province to say thank you to those that have served very well. They are the people that have put their lives on the line for the country and that is how they are thanked and it means a lot,” she says.

Hange adds that what they (SANDF members) love the most about their job is the teamwork and discipline. “Discipline is the core of the military. Without it there is nothing that we can do. For us it is always comply and ask questions later. Discipline is very important and people must always remember the values. We also can’t operate in silos so the medals are given to those that have been in service for long across the board.”
