Playing sports you love has become one of the police services’ ways of keeping fit, with various sporting codes and leagues created for their officers.

And in celebration of their love for soccer, a team made up of Mitchell’s Plain Police Station officers have been competing for more than eight years.

Mitchell’s Plain Marauders FC was established in 2010 in a bid to keep members fit while showing their love for football.

Competing in a police cluster soccer league, each of the eight police stations have their own soccer team.

“Each station has their own team depending on the amount of soccer players in each police station.

“Some police stations combine members with their neighbouring police stations to make-up a team,” says Constable Nozuko Makwayiba, Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson.

The team trains every Wednesday, during time set out by police management specifically for sport practise and games.

There are three divisions in the Cluster Soccer League: The Premier division, the second division and the third division.

The Marauders FC homeground is Stephen Reagan sports field in Westridge.

“The Marauders was promoted in the 2017 season from the second division to the first division (Premier League),” says Makwayiba.

The club has been involved and participating in all seasons.

The players are all police officials and include Vuyani Mpakathi, Sipho Norman, Abduragman Julius, Chuma Phenduka, Wanda Mtongana, Mncedisi Bitshana, Monde Mtshemla, Mzoxolo Mbali, Sizwe Mininye, Akhona Maqubu, Steve Mtshabane and Thobela Sopapaza.
