An Athlone drummer has gathered up some of his gospel peers with the hopes of inspiring Cape Town’s youth.

Riley-Rei will be presenting Be the Change, what he calls a one-night youth crusade, with Tray-V, S.O.M, CM Ministries, Peter Maart, Elton Jansen for CCFM, DaFaith, DJ Manny, saxophonist August West and his band at the Silvertown Baptist Church on Friday 19 August.

Riley-Rei, whose real name is Chaswin Adonis, has shared the stage with some of SA’s biggest music names and has always believed in the power of music as a tool for upliftment.

In the past, Riley has offered his services as a teacher to children from underprivileged backgrounds and says his biggest hope is to inspire others, by helping them to use music as a way to get off the streets. At the moment though, he is focusing on his theology studies at the Cape Town Biblical College.

“I’ve been planning this show for about a year now,” Riley-Rei says enthusiastically.

He’s been doing so with the help of rapper Tray-V, whom he’s been working with musically for quite some time.

“It’s about setting a platform to get our youth back into the church,” he says of his crusade, pointing out that many young people succumb to “what society’s offering them”, getting involved with crime and harmful things like drugs and alcohol.

“We’re setting a platform to show (young people) that they don’t need to conform to society.”

Riley-Rei points out that all the artists on stage are people who have been through challenges, but have overcome them “and this is where they are today”.

The audience can expect “a blast of everything” on Friday night with everything from singing and rapping to dancing and a DJ on the line-up.

“We are setting the night for the youth of Cape Town; or the youth of God if I can put it that way.”

Tickets for the show at Silvertown Baptist Church on the corner of Olympic and Linaria Crescent in Athlone on Friday 19 August from 19:30 cost R20 at the door.
