A Green Point resident is one of three Western Cape women to make it as a Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa finalist.

Amber Denae Wright, who recently relocated from Bishopscourt to Green Point, was announced as one of the 25 finalists at a star-studded charity ball held in Johannesburg last month.

But the local says she entered the competition to inspire other women.

“I decided to enter Mrs South Africa because I have a message that I am passionate about sharing with the women of South Africa. Mrs South Africa’s biggest gift to past winners has been the gift of a platform that empowers them to reach the women of our country, and I believe that I could utilise that platform to promote body confidence and inspire other women to have confidence in themselves. I also love that Mrs South Africa shines a positive light on marriage, a perspective I share wholeheartedly, and a perspective that I am proud to support along with the Mrs South Africa brand,” says the 24-year-old.

Wright has a variety of interests and likes to “dabble in a bit of everything” – she is reportedly a scuba diver and game ranger, and represented South Africa at the Touch Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2015.

She studied accountancy and recently changed careers to pursue her passion in interior design, and married her “Mr Wright” last year.

For Wright, taking part in the pageant has been a remarkable journey.

“Mrs South Africa is known as a women’s empowerment programme, and that is exactly what my experience has been. It has empowered me, helped me become more confident in myself and has made me appreciate the support of my husband and family even more than usual. It has also challenged me, which in turn has resulted in my growing and has given me the opportunity to work on becoming the best version of myself in all areas,” she says.

“I’ve also been able to meet so many incredible women along the way who have taught me skills and lessons that I will carry with me forever.”

She adds that the “Top 100 was filled with powerful, beautiful and inspiring women, and to be chosen out of such a strong group was an extremely humbling experience”.

The top 25 finalists will now embark on a journey of fundraising, networking and self-development until the final round of judging. The winner will be crowned on Friday 9 November.

But for Wright, the focus remains on making a change, not winning the crown.

“I hope to be a positive role model for women in a world where there is so much pressure to look a certain way or be a certain size. I hope that my story and my journey can inspire other women to chase their dreams, to love and respect themselves and to make a life that they can be passionate about. I hope that through this amazing platform I will be able to exercise change within my community and help women believe in themselves and be unapologetically confident, strong and courageous.”
