Open day to view print as art

2017-11-21 06:00

A local printmaker will hold an open day to show off the work of her students.

Noeleen Kleve, an artist, etching teacher and art therapist facilitator, is holding an open studio day and showing the best prints of her etching students. The exhibition is titled Journey in print.

Kleve currently teaches a dozen students and has a waiting list for her classes. The open day and student exhibition showcase the work that happens in the studio, she says.

“Many students are not practising artists, so the exhibition gives my students an opportunity to experience the professional practice of an exhibition and for friends, family and other members of the local community to see how a fine art print on paper is made and to help further the appreciation and understanding of the practice of fine art printmaking,” Kleve says.

“What I love about printmaking as an art form is its diversity and accessibility. The various forms, such as woodcut, linocut, drypoint, etching and monotype, can be easily learnt in their basic forms, with the minimum of materials, yet can also be taken through several processes to create more complexity.

“Since multiple originals are hand printed in limited editions, printmaking is also more affordable to the buyer.”

Kleve also offers art therapy at False Bay Hospital.

“In my experience of art as a therapeutic tool, I have worked with several communities in the South Peninsula, including groups from Ocean View and Masiphumelele. Time spent in a creative activity often unlocks a freedom to express oneself, in ways that cannot be easily done verbally. Artmaking can be both a cathartic as well as a fulfilling experience, particularly when one focuses on the process of making and creating while working up to the final image,” she explains.

She hopes the open day on Saturday 2 December will allow locals to see the platemaking and printing process first-hand in her etching studio.

“They will have the opportunity to interact with the artists and myself and ask questions. An affordable selection of framed and unframed original handmade prints will also be on display and for sale,” she says.

V The studio at 8 Sunbird Close, Kommetjie will be open from 11:00 to 17:00. For more information email kleve@global.co.za or follow Kleve Create on Facebook.
