Japanese opera singer, Meiko Tsurusawa, will be singing to raise funds for the re-painting of Beth Uriel - House of Light, a home for disadvantaged young men in Observatory.

“(Tsurusawa) performs in unusual places and can sing national anthems of 45 countries and has been singing them instilling patriotism and nationalism in people,” says a statement from the home.

Tsurusawa has travelled to over 30 countries encouraging world peace and social change through her talent.

Next on her list is the Mekasi social enterprise coffee shop run by Beth Uriel.

Beth Uriel has been running more than 30 years to give young men another chance in life. The home houses 26 young men aged between 18 and 24 and provides meals and other basic needs for them.

“Our aim is to help these young men to achieve independence through four key areas: a safe home; education; life skills and job readiness and family reunification,” says the statement.

The event takes on Saturday 15 September from 11:00 to 12:00 at Mekasi Coffee Shop in Salt River.

The home aims to raise R40 000 to purchase 50 20l tins of paint. The paint will be used to carry though the new colour style on the front of the building, which was donated by Jubilee Community Church.
