Local celebrity chef and author Zola Nene recently cooked up an international award.

Nene won the award for TV Celebrity Chef (English), and came second in the category Best TV Chef Book in English at this year’s Gourmand World Cookbook Awards which were held in China.

Nene says: “I’m ecstatic with the result; and to think that I came to China to represent South Africa in one category and ended up receiving two awards.”

The Green Point resident was also asked to take part in the opening ceremony for the awards by carrying the South African flag in the opening procession.

As part of her tour of China – by invitation of the South African embassy – Nene will be travelling to Beijing to host a South African food festival at which she will be preparing three menus created specifically for the event.

The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards have been dubbed the “Oscars” of the gastronomy world. In their 22nd year, the awards honour the best food and wine books – printed or digital – and food TV shows from around the world.
