Our communities need protection

2018-11-20 06:02

The moral decay of our communities is rampant and evident of the many robberies, rapes, murders and assaults taking place on an almost daily basis.

Every day newspapers are filled with stories of horror that chill us to the bone. And every day we witness how perpetrators are sentenced to nothing less than a life sentence for the heinous crimes committed. Our children need protection. Our elderly need protection. Whole communities need protection. Because, nowadays, everyone is an easy target as crime is escalating at such an alarming rate.We have become so desensitised by what is happening in and around our communities and our hope is lost in a government meant to be in place to help, serve and protect us. But, instead, we look on helplessly and with so much frustration, when a murderer is given a life sentence for killing an innocent person and we are left with broken hearts, broken families and, to top it all, paying our hard-earned taxes towards the up-keep of these hardened criminals who have committed these heinous crimes and who have been imprisoned. Are the sentences handed out enough to rehabilitate any offender? I think not. Most perpetrators are getting off far too easily for committing such heinous crimes.

More stringent measures ought to be put in place to try and eradicate the fear of crime. After all, personal safety is also a fundamental human right.
