Savage panga attack on street

2016-02-02 06:00

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a 19-year-old man was attacked with a panga while walking home in Claremont.

According to Captain Angie Latchman, spokesperson of the Wynberg policing cluster, nothing was taken from the victim during or after the attack.

The incident occurred on Friday 23 January at about 03:00 as he was walking along Bowwood Road.

“He was approached by three unknown men in a car who stopped to ask where the nearest ATM was. After giving them directions he continued to walk,” she says.

Latchman says the victim told them that the suspects then turned the car around and came back toward him.

They then proceeded to exit the car and attacked him from behind, hitting him over the head.

“He fell to the ground and the suspects were about to hit him over the head with a panga machete. In the process, as he protected his face, he was hit on the hand and was severely injured,” she says.

The motive surrounding the incident is unknown and police are continuing investigations.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the police at the Claremont police station.

According to a Facebook post by one of the victim’s friends, Tayler Sani, her friend Zander Vermeulen (the victim) was stopped by a small silver car coming from the opposite direction, and was asked for directions by the two men inside.

While walking away from the car, one man exited the car, carrying a panga machete, and began to chase the victim.

While running away, Vermeulen was struck on the back of his head with the panga, and tripped.

Trying to protect himself, he raised his arm up, and his hand was subsequently severed.

He ran, holding his hand, back down Bowwood Road, and the attackers fled.

Vermeulen managed to reach Sani’s flat, bleeding profusely and crying out for help.

Sani and another friend took Vermeulen to the hospital.

“He had lost a lot of blood and he is truly very lucky to be alive. The outcome could have been very different,” she writes.

In her post Sani says the doctors reattached Vermeulen’s hand and placed 16 staples in his head.

He is making steady progress but he has a very long road ahead in terms of reaching full recovery, she says.

Sani also urges anyone with information “about this brutal attack” to come forward.

“Your help may be crucial in stopping these barbaric human beings.”
