Panic over crime

2016-08-16 06:00

Motorists travelling on highways are urged to practice caution and be vigilant following another attack near Mitchell’s Plain.

A post shared on social media was a call for panic following reports of the attack on the AZ Berman/ Stock Road bridge of the R300. The post shared after 00:00 on Tuesday morning (9 August) documents the attack from an eye witness account.

“Be careful on the R300 over the StockRoad/ AZ Berman bridge,” it reads.

The post says that a group of people placed a drain cover in the road and caused about 10 cars to have tyre bursts.

Several injuries were also reported.

The author of the post says a group of people then converged on the vehicles aiming to rob the occupants of their possessions.

City of Cape Town spokesperson, Priya Reddy, confirms the incident. “The City Law Enforcement caravan situated at the corner of Jakes Gerwel Drive and the R300 recorded an incident involving four vehicles on Monday 8 August at the footbridge over the R300 which leads into Colorado Park,” says Reddy.

“A drain cover was placed in the roadway and four vehicles were damaged after making contact with the cover. One person sustained a rib injury.”

Thus far no arrests were made in connection with the incident.

“This type of incident, where objects are placed in the road, has happened before – most notably on the N2 highway. We appeal to motorists using the city’s highways to always have the City’s emergency telephone number at hand and to call for assistance if confronted with any type of threatening situation. The Law Enforcement caravan is specifically located on the western end of the R300 to facilitate a quick response,” says Reddy.V For emergency assistance on the Highways call the City’s emergency number on 021 480 7700.
