A programme at Kannemeyer Primary School in Grassy Park is putting parents at the forefront of their children’s success.

On Wednesday 29 March the school celebrated another round of parents who completed the Wordworks course that teach parents how to help their children to improve their maths and literacy skills.

One of the facilitators, Miranda Collop, says it is a fun programme.

“We are very proud of our latest batch of parents who want to make a difference in the education of their children,” she says.

“Since we started, parents have shown tremendous interest and there has been a marked increase in the annual systemic tests for maths and literacy at our school.”

Collop adds that the programme also plays a part in bringing a family closer together.

“Evidence also shows that communication between child and parent improves as the parent develops more patience with their children. Parents are introduced to different games that helps counting as well as reading and the best part is that learning takes place by having fun.”

One of the parents who took the course, Chervon Jansen, says a bonus is that her three-year-old son is benefitting from her training.

“My daughter is in Grade 1 but my son already loves the programme,” she says. “When I am busy with my daughter he joins in with enthusiasm.”
