Park upgrade on track

2018-03-27 06:00

Upgrades to the lower section of De Waal Park are expected to begin next month.

The initial plan to create a running track has now been expanded, says ward councillor Dave Bryant – who’s ward allocation is funding the project – and will include additional infrastructure.

“There was some additional budget available, some of which will also be spent on other parks in the ward, including parks in Woodstock and surrounds.

“Improved public lighting is now also due to be installed to address safety concerns, along with water-wise tree planting and public outdoor gym equipment. We would like the space to become better utilised and serve as a safe activity area for the community.”

It is expected that the project will break ground within the first two weeks of April.

“Residents have expressed a desire for more outdoor recreation spaces and this project acknowledges those sentiments. The track will provide a more formalised place for jogging, and little ones will be able to practise riding their bikes without danger from cars. Historically a track existed at the space as shown in maps from 1895.”

The upgrade will seek to connect two sections of the park, Bryant previously told People’s Post (“Runners get track in park”, 12 September 2017).

“Part of the plan includes linking the upper De Waal Park and the lower De Waal Park with zebra crossings to improve pedestrian access,” he says.

Some parts of the site are declared provincial heritage areas and others are graded 3A in terms of heritage legislation, which means consultation with relevant heritage departments is needed, Bryant explains.

“The goal is to improve walking and jogging facilities in the area and encourage positive community usage at the site,” he says.
