Parking area a ‘crime concern’

More patrols are needed to make the zoo parking at Rhodes Memorial in Rondebosch a safer space.

Warrant Officer Lyndon Sisam, Rondebosch police spokesperson, says the zoo parking has become a concern for the station as a number of incidents occurring there have been reported. He says criminals target couples using the spot “as a lovers’ lane”, students walking past and elderly people taking an evening walk in the area. Robbery, carjacking and theft out of vehicles are described as the most prevalent crimes happening at the zoo parking.

Sisam says the trend emerged two months ago, resulting in various strategies being considered in an attempt to eliminate the alleged criminal elements. Among the attempts by the police was the bid to find the owner of the parking, and according to Sisam, it belongs to Table Mountain National Park.

“We have approached and informed them of our concern. We suggested that they also establish a patrol team as many eyes would help us tackle this problem. UCT is also on board – they have started patrolling the area in peak hours. Together we can beat this before it gets out of hand. Our officers are doing their best, there is more visibility and an arrest has already been made. Some cases are under investigation.”

He advises the public to be vigilant and notify police of any suspicious behaviour.

Bernard Soules, the chairperson of Rondebosch Community Policing Forum, says crimes in this area can be curbed if everyone does their part. He says it has emerged that some of the incidents are not reported and they need records to help them know what they are dealing with.
