Peaceful walk against crime

In response to crimes and the taxi violence that gripped the area in recent weeks, leaving four people dead, Hout Bay residents held a peaceful walk on Saturday 13 April to reclaim their area.

A Hout Bay resident and a convener for the walk, Allessandro Mariola made it clear that they are not part of any organisation. They are residents who were affected by what was happening in the area.

The route was from the Imizamo Yethu Circle toward Victoria Road on the M6 past Earthworks.

Then left into Victoria Road, heading towards the harbour, left at the Princess Street Circle towards Main Road. At the Mainstream Centre Circle, they turned left again and walked back along Main Road to the starting point. “Of late there has been a lot of bad publicity all around from our area about the crime and taxi violence. What really left me devastated was the robbing and killing of a father for his cellphone. This was just too much for me,” he says.

Mariola says the peaceful walk was to stand against any form of crime and bring the residents together to work towards a safer area.

Though only a handful of people attended the walk, Mariola says they are happy that they could put their message across.

“We have a lot of keyboard warriors but when it is time to act, nobody comes out. When it is time to get out of the comfort zone nobody really wants to stand up. I’m glad that those that came out showed that they are against any form of criminality,” he says.

Moved by the lyrics from John Lennon song Imagine, their wish is for a world where everyone can live in peace.
