“Always plan your day and work ahead of schedule – effective time management is very important,” says the award-winning CEO, Peet de Wet.

De Wet has been CEO of Steenberg Golf Estate for three years and recently received the award for Manager of the Year from the Club Management Association of South Africa (CMASA) at an annual ceremony held at Pearl Valley on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 August.

According to a statement, the awards, presented in association with Jonas, Go Sport Travel, Toro, Club Car and Syngenta, recognise top managers and employees who lead with distinction at a variety of South Africa’s sport and recreation clubs.

De Wet’s prizes include an all-expenses-paid trip to the value of R50 000, courtesy of Jonas, to attend the Club Management Association of America’s (CMAA) World Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, in February.

He attributes his success to commitment and teamwork within Steenberg Golf Club.

“The annual CMASA awards and recognition by my peers in the club industry are a collective celebration for me and my team at Steenberg Golf Estate.

“Awards do not only acknowledge individual success, they also recognise many other role players who participated in the effort and our continuous strive for excellence.”

He says a positive attitude and being surrounded by the right people, as well as the desire to inspire others, is the key to success.

“To be a successful CEO, I have the obligation to be an inspiration to all my employees. [I] lead from the front and walk the talk. I always quote John Quincy Adams: ‘If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.’ Do not give up, be persistent,” says De Wet, sharing his secret to success.

He manages several operational departments to ensure the success and sustainability of the estate. His duties include overseeing security, landscaping, architectural guidelines, maintenance, the golf course.

De Wet has plans to build on the success he and his team have already achieved at Steenberg.

“Our next step is to become the best golf and residential estate in South Africa.

“Going from good to great is a big challenge and we will strive to ensure that we are highly respected as a world-class facility by continuously surpassing global club industry and service standards.”

CMASA’s general manager, Janyne Marais, says the association was thrilled with the level of commitment and passion shown by this year’s winners. “Peet has once again proved that professional management, strategic leadership, determination and teamwork can unlock the potential to solve problems that may seem insurmountable, and that this can then enable us to change the lives of the communities we live and work in.”
