Phone shop robbed

Two robberies, both on Monday, have Athlone police on the search for six robbers.

Vangate Mall was targeted by robbers last Monday evening. According to Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita Norman, a cellphone shop at Vangate Mall was robbed.

Norman says an employee of the store told police that the shop was already closed when one employee noticed two unknown men standing at the door. As he opened the door, the men pushed him and his colleague back into the store.

“Once in the store one of the men pointed a firearm at the employees and demanded that they go to the back room. One employee noticed another two armed unknown men also entering the store and they demanded that he and the other staff put all the cellphones into bags and open the safe, which was opened and cash was taken. No shots were fired and no injuries were sustained,” says Norman.

Around 300 cellphones and R10 000 in cash were stolen.

No-one has been arrested yet, but video footage of the incident has been retrieved.

Athlone Police Station commander Colonel Mark Adonis asks that anyone with information on the robbery comes forward.

Earlier on Monday a shop in Thornton Road was robbed when four robbers threatened the 51-year-old shop owner.

“Four unknown men entered the shop, one approached the owner of the shop and they went outside to talk, which led to the men trying to take his watch out of his hand. The other unknown man came behind the counter and took money to the value of R1000 out of the till, airtime vouchers, a cellphone, the airtime machine valued at R1800 and the shop owner’s bag, containing keys and a cellphone, before they fled the scene,” says Norman.

She adds swift response by the police led to the arrest two suspects, but that the remaining robbers are still at large.
