Plan for seaside art

2017-12-05 06:00

A public art management plan is being drafted and is expected to be piloted on the Sea Point Promenade.

Suzette Little, Mayco member (North), says the need for the plan arose as the City of Cape Town receives regular requests from artists to install their artworks, such as murals and sculptures, on the promenade.

“The public art management plan will aim to formalise a methodology for the commissioning of public artwork through a competitive process to give Cape Town’s creative industry the opportunity to get involved in an inclusive long-term public art process,” she says.

“The public art management plan must still be written, but we are anticipating that it will include guidelines for the commissioning of the artworks, design guidelines for the brief (advert) of the artworks, submission requirements (including format, media, maquette requirements, etc.), evaluation procedures and guidelines for the adjudication committee, a public art master plan with the locations of the artworks along the Sea Point and Mouille Point promenade and management and maintenance guidelines.”

The proposed plan was presented at a recent ward 54 committee meeting, where City officials indicated it would likely include details of the biannual, temporary installation of artworks in a “curated space”. The artworks would be selected by a committee of art experts. There may also be the inclusion of permanent artworks after a period of time.

However, Little stresses, the details of these will be included under the management plan and City officials are still in the planning phase for this.

“The [management plan] will add interest to the promenade through carefully curated artworks without cluttering the area,” she says.
