The Kirstenbosch Plant fair hosted by the Botanical Society was a huge success and the next one is already in the planning phase.

The fair is an important fundraiser for the Kirstenbosch Botanical Society. Funds raised go towards conservation, outreach and education projects. “It also shares the wonder of our unique botanical heritage,” said the convener of the fair, Doctor Nathan Finkelstein.

There were over 10 000 plants on sale at very competitive prices.

Finkelstein explained how much of a success the plant fair was. “We had over 2000 people on Saturday morning with almost all of the plants sold on Saturday morning. There were no plants at all for Sunday and we had to make a plan,” he says.

This year’s fair put an emphasis on the abundance of fragrant plants in the plant kingdom with the theme of Amazing Aromatics.

“People came there for specific plants and we are glad we could give that to them. They came with lists in hand for the plants that they wanted,” he says, adding that the weather Gods were very kind to them.

“We had beautiful days throughout the weekend. It was fun and we really enjoyed it. This is what the people of Cape Town and other areas missed.”
