It was a day of fun and play as kids came together for a fun packed day organised by one of their own in the area.Darren van der Merwe a 1st Steenberg scout was joined by other scout boys to bring joy to the community. Last Saturday they had a fun day were they fed about 300 children in their Seawinds community and the surroundings. This is the second time that the boys are holding such an initiative in their area (“Rolling up sleeves to help”, People’s Post 3 April). They had jumping castles, music and the children that came to the fun day had an opportunity to play games from back in the day. The event was held at Seawinds ParkDarren’s mothers, Rayleigh says they gave out sandwiches and juice. “The event was very successful. The people who made this possible was the City of Cape Town; Charity cruisers; Pick n Pay Constantia; the lady of the jumping castle, the DJ and all the people that stood by Darren and 1St Steenberg Scouts. And his school, Sullivan Primary, and Muizenberg and Camps Bay scouts as well as GO Koning. We wouldn’t have done it without their help. It was really nice to see everyone playing together,” she says. She says her son hosted the fun day because he felt there is nothing in the area for the children to do.“The park was a mess, children couldn’t play there. The park was being used for all wrong activities like smoking dagga and gangsters then he then thought we need a basketball court or a soccer pitch or park to be fenced. He had to clean it up with the help of the scouts as well. We took to the park and we had such a nice day,” she says.
