Police call for vigilance at parking areas

2018-05-15 06:00

Sea Point police are warning motorists to be more protective of their belongings when parking their vehicles without supervision.

This follows a rise in the number of vehicle-related cases reported at the station recently.

According to the statement most vehicles are targeted because owners leave their valuables carelessly lying in their cars where criminals can see them from the outside.

Captain Elizabeth Munro, Sea Point police spokesperson, says they have increased their patrols and visibility in the area.

Police have also conducted awareness initiatives through pamphlet distributions. “Several residents have suffered a loss as a result of their vehicles being broken into,” says Munro.

“The type of belongings reported stolen were handbags, cellphones, laptops, computer equipment, clothing and jewellery. Arrests have been made for theft out of motor vehicles and possession of suspected stolen property.”

Munro says the Sea Point police and Green Point Neighbourhood Watch are informing the community about being vigilant in the Sea Point precinct.

She advises the following:

. Keep your doors locked at all times and park in well-lit areas at night.

. Remove valuable items if possible, before your departure.

. Manually ensure your vehicle is locked by pulling on the door handle, and activate the alarm system.

. Make sure you have the number of the car rental company at hand in case you get stranded, if applicable.

. Do not leave your GPS on the windscreen while the vehicle is parked.
