Manenberg police have arrested a 36-year-old man for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition on Tuesday 18 May.

Manenberg police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Bennett says the crime prevention unit deployed in the area for high density patrols were busy with stop and searches.

The suspect was caught out after police, who were patrolling the Greatfish Avenue area, spotted him as he was trying to evade the patrol. On noticing the man had turned around and moved away from the patrol, one police officer stopped and searched him.

They found a 9mm pistol with the serial number removed and 14 rounds of ammunition. The 36-year-old man was arrested for the possession and will be charged on an additional charge of prohibited firearm. Bennett said this charge carries a heavier and harsher sentence.

The 36-year-old male appeared in the Athlone Court on Thursday 19 May on those charges and was released on R1000 bail. The case has been remanded to Tuesday 26 July.
