Police increase safety campaigns on schools

2018-10-02 06:01

Athlone police have increased their safety awareness campaigns after receiving several reports of child snatchers in the area over the past few weeks.

Sergeant Zita Norman, Athlone police spokesperson, explains the station’s sector commanders have put great emphasis on the campaigns at schools.

She says the aim of the campaign is to equip learners on how to avoid being victims of child trafficking.

“We also aim to raise awareness on safety, when learners depart for school in the morning and when they head home in the afternoon.

“Parents are urged to liaise with the transporters who are collecting and dropping their children, as to what times the school dismisses on certain days.

“And if the child will be doing extramural activities, they should check whether other transport has been made available for that particular child.”

Norman says Athlone police will continue with the patrols, daily, before school commences and when it dismisses in the afternoon.

“With the school holidays underway, parents are urged to take precautionary measures when it comes to their kids visiting malls and having play dates at venues other than one’s residence.

“Always ensure that there is an adult to accompany children at all times, when you as the parent cannot. Community members residing in roads where schools are situated are also urged to report suspicious-looking persons or vehicles in the area to the Athlone police on 021 697 9238/39.”
