Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut confirms the circumstances surrounding an incident on the N1 in Kraaifontein earlier today are being investigated.

According to Traut, a 59-year-old man, suspected to be a drug dealer, was shot and wounded during a high-speed chase.

The N1 was closed in both directions between Brighton Road and Okavango Road, which caused traffic delays.

According to unconfirmed reports an attempted robbery took place at the nearby CapeGate Shopping Centre and following a shootout on both sides of the N1, police brought the suspects to a halt.

Facebook user Morne Fourie captured part of the incident on his dash cam as it unfolded.

“No further information can be released at this stage,” said Traut.

In another incident on the N1 outbound, at Paarden Eiland, City of Cape Town traffic services spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout confirms a taxi and five cars were involved in an accident. Bezuidenhout says the taxi driver lost control and collided with the other five cars.

“Two people sustained slight injuries and the cause of the accident will be investigated by the police. The accident scene has subsequently been cleared and the roadway reopened.”
