Police statistics: mixed

Police last week released their annual national police crime statistics for the 2016/17 financial year from April to March.

Below, we look at the statistics for the four stations in the distribution area.Claremont

In comparison to last year, the Claremont police station saw an increase in contact crime, sexual assault, common robberies and residential robberies.

The contact crime category includes murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, assault and assault with intent to do grevious bodily harm, robberies and robbery with aggravated circumstances. The number of contact crimes increased from 451 to 466.Mowbray

Mowbray police station saw a decrease in most of the overall categories with the exception of house robberies which increased by 80%.

Robberies at non-residential premises also increased by 23%. Police also made more arrests for drinking under the influence of alcohol with 12% more arrests compared to last year.Pinelands

In the overall catagories of contact crime there was a mixed result with sexual assault and common robberies increasing and murder, attempted murder and common assault ­decreasing.

Only one murder was reported last year with none reported this year, this was accompanied by three attempted murders last year and two this year.Rondebosch

Rondebosch Police station maintained a clear record with contact crime in Rondebosch decreasing ­overall.

No murders or attempted murder reported by residents and fewer sexual offences, common robbery and robbery with aggravated circumstances reported. Assault with intent to do grevious bodily harm and common assault, commercial crime and robberies at residential properties all increased.
