A total of 14 suspects, aged between 22 and 56, have been arrested for various crimes, and Ocean View police have policing partnerships to thank for these arrests.

The police officers – together with Law Enforcement, Metro Police and the Military Police – conducted crime prevention operations from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 May.

Sergeant Leon Fortuin, spokesperson for Ocean View police, says the suspects were arrested for charges relating to murder, possession of drugs and possession of dangerous weapons.

“One suspect was found with 246 packets of dagga with an unknown street value because the dagga is high-quality compressed dagga. In a separate incident, another suspect was found with 33 packets of tik with an estimated street value of R1290. All the suspects were charged and appeared in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday 7 May,” he says.

Fortuin says the station management hopes that the community has seen the increased police visibility, and that trust can be restored between the community and the police.

“The arrest for murder occurred in Masiphumelele after the victim succumbed to his injuries after being stabbed at a local shebeen. The police had also been closing down shebeens early all weekend, but this shebeen managed to reopen after the police had left and the police members were busy with arrests. The police will continue closing down shebeens in Masiphumelele and Ocean View. We will continue to maintain a high police visibility in Ocean View to ensure that the community can live without the fear of crime and can feel safe in their homes once again.”
