The Kensington swimming pool closed at the end of February to undergo major repairs and essential maintenance.

The pool, situated in Dapper Road, had its gates locked on Thursday 28 February and will remain closed for three months.

Mayco member for community services and health Zahid Badroodien said they realise the summer season has not yet ended and the other pools are still open until April, but to be prepared and fully operational for the 2019/2020 peak summer season, the Recreation and Parks Department decided not to delay the start of the project.

The estimated cost of this project is R1.6m, which will cover the replacement of all rusted inlet and outlet filtration pipes and valves around the main pool which forms part of the aging infrastructure and are causing underground leaks.

The pool deck will also be lifted to allow aging pipes to be excavated and replaced. The cost will also cover the construction of a paved area.

Winter rains may affect the renovation, which might delay the project.

“Cape Town’s swimming facilities are well used and Kensington swimming pool provides the perfect opportunity for families to cool down on a hot summer day as it includes a main pool and splash pool,” said Badroodien.

They encourage community members to be patient while the construction is ongoing.Swimming pools in Atlantis, Langa, Khayelitsha, Mnandi, Bellville South, Bonteheuwel, Goodwood, Vulindlela, Emthonjeni, Hanover Park, Mannenberg, Muizenberg and Eastridge will be open from 13:00 to 17:00 from Tuesdays to Fridays.

On Saturdays and Sundays the pools will be open from 10:00 to 17:00.

The City’s four indoor pools in Blue Downs, Retreat, the Strand and Long Street, as well as the Sea Point swimming pool, will remain open to the public daily.
