Public swimming pools will be ready for splish and splash from Saturday 1 October, just in time for the start of the upcoming school spring holiday.

The City of Cape Town’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities (SRA) Department has made every effort to ensure that its public swimming pools will be ready for the upcoming school holidays and summer season. Part of the preparations included the rigorous training of more than 200 lifeguards who will be ready for duty when the swimming pools open.

Swimming pools will be open from 10:00 until 17:00 daily.

During the peak season between 16 December and 15 January, the operating hours of the swimming pools will be extended from 09:00 until 18:00. Regular water testing will be conducted by the City’s Scientific Services Branch to ensure that the water quality at all of the pools is safe and of an acceptable standard.

Due to severe vandalism, Trafalgar swimming pool will remain closed while undergoing repairs. In addition, the Athlone, Newlands, Retreat, Langa and Westridge swimming pools are currently undergoing scheduled repairs and maintenance, explains Mayco member for community services, Anda Ntsodo.

“We place huge emphasis on the safety of the patrons at our facilities. But I want to emphasise that pool safety does not begin and end with lifeguards. Parents and guardians need to share the responsibility between themselves and our safety staff,” he says.

“Lifeguards are under immense pressure as they have to keep an eye on hundreds of people at any given time. It becomes quite challenging to see if someone is in trouble when there are so many people jumping and splashing around in the water.”

All users of our swimming pools are urged to obey the instructions and guidance of the lifeguards.
