Praise for conviction

2016-05-03 06:00

Steenberg police investigating officers seem to be pushing the right buttons when it comes to investigation cases as criminals are being convicted.

One officer in particular has been applauded for a job well done.

Sergeant Heinrich Sampson was congratulated by the station commander, Colonel Jan Alexander, and the branch commander, Major Murphy Papa, for his sterling and successful investigation.

One case stood out on the investigating officer’s record, when he secured a conviction for two robbers.

On Wednesday 22 July 2015, between 07:00 and 08:00, an 18-year-old was on his way to school in Chiphill Side Street in Retreat.

He was approached from behind by two unknown suspects who held him at knifepoint and wanted to rob him of his Samsung cellphone.

The complainant resisted and grabbed the knife by the blade where he sustained deep cuts to six of his fingers. He threw the cellphone a distance away from him.

The suspects went to pick it up and ran towards their residence in Lesar Court Steenberg.

The complainant was assisted by the community and both suspects were caught and handed over to police.

The value of the phone was R2000.

On Wednesday 22 March this year, the suspects were found guilty in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Leroy Manneville was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment of which five years were suspended for five years on condition that the accused not be found guilty of an offence of robbery or attempted robbery during the period of suspension.

Michael Adams was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment of which four years were suspended for five years on condition that the accused not be found guilty of an offence of robbery or attempted robbery during the period of suspension.
