Communities in the Far South, from Fish Hoek to Simon’s Town, across Scarborough, Kommetjie and Noordhoek, will benefit through the community service projects in which the Lions Club of Fish Hoek-Simon’s Bay will be involved.

This is the undertaking of the new president of the Lions Club, Sue Kinnell.

“All the areas in between will also benefit. We start off with a ‘meet and greet’ on Tuesday 7 August as part of a membership drive at the Fish Hoek Bowls Club,” she says.

She was a member of Cape Recife Lions Club in Port Elizabeth for 10 years where she served as community service chairperson, club secretary and president.

“When my husband, James, retired five years ago we moved to Kommetjie to be closer to our children and grandchildren who live in Cape Town. We decided to transfer to Fish Hoek Lions Club as it’s the club that serves our valley. We have always been community service driven and believe in spending time giving back to one’s community,” Kinnell says.

Fish Hoek Lions Club has a number of regular projects that are currently underway.

“We run a monthly diabetes support group at the Fish Hoek Library on the first Thursday afternoon of the month; we entertain the elderly with a Beetle drive at Nerina Gardens; we support a number of organisations for mentally and physically challenged children and abused children, as well as a shelter for homeless people in Simon’s Town.

“We recently took some children from Ocean View to the Cape Times Fresh Air Camp in Simon’s Town. On Mandela Day we collected food at Pick n Pay Longbeach for distribution, through Food Forward, to the hungry, as part of the Mandela Day celebrations. We are also holding a ‘Christmas in July’ for the ladies at Clifton Parade this month,” she says.

Other activities in which the club will be involved include participating in the annual Cape Town One-to-One Day in August, while in September Fish Hoek Lions and Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope, in conjunction with FH 100 & Beyond, will be holding a spring tea for senior citizens from the valley.

“These are some of the activities/projects we do and have planned for the year ahead. We are now actively looking for new members and I am appealing to all in the valley to come to the ‘meet and greet’ on Tuesday at 18:00. We’ll inform the attendees of our future planned projects as well as give the residents the opportunity to meet us,” Kinnell says.

If you would like to know more about the Lions Club’s projects in the valley, or if you would like to become involved in community focused projects and build friendships with like-minded people, be present on Tuesday. Light refreshments will be served.
