Motorists are warned to avoid Steenbeerg Road between Westlake and Alphen Shopping Centre as residents have embarked on a service delivery march today (Monday 4 May).

Other affected roads include Orpen and Spaanschemat River roads.

Hundreds of angry residents are marching between Steenberg and Alphen Community Centre in Constantia to handover a memorandum to ward councillor Penny East.

The memorandum is expected to be handed over at before 12:30.

Kirstenhof police spokesperson Captain Edgar Jones says though officers have contained the situation, motorists should use alternative routes until the road has been cleared. “We have contained the situation, there are no violent actions taking place at this stage but we advise motorists to avoid this route. We are still monitoring the situation and people are angry. We want everyone to be safe.”

He says no shots have been fired and no one has been arrested.

Resident Amanda Nobanda says the community demands answers about housing development plans and poor service at the local clinic. She says they have been waiting for too long for their councillor to address their needs.

East says she is aware of the grievances and will accept and respond to the memorandum in due time. East urges the community to remain calm and safe during the protest.
