Pupils of Muhammadeyah Primary School in Wynberg participated in a two-hour workshop to improve their language and maths skills last Tuesday.

Pupils were made aware of the importance of developing their language abilities by reading and building a solid vocabulary.

They were also taught the importance of a dictionary and the role a dictionary plays in a pupil’s life.

Pupils were given practical study tips and shown techniques to integrate the work in the classroom in their own lives.

The programme was presented by Bradley de Kock, founder of B-all Academy who dedicates his time to visiting schools and helping pupils.

“The problem is that many pupils can’t seem to connect the dots and treat school like a separate entity, so it’s important for them to get some extra help”, says De Kock.

De Kock says he doesn’t want pupils to fall like he did.

“There was a point where I failed dismally. It was so bad, but I had to pick up the pieces,” he says.

De Kock’s tips for good school habits:

. Listen more and speak less in class.

. Get proper nutrition and sufficient sleep.

. Exercise. Hormones and chemicals are released that make it easier to study.

. Build relationships. By sharing the information it reinforces what you learnt.

. Do mental gymnastics by doing puzzles.

. Build vocabulary. Learn a new word each day.

. Read as a hobby.

. Use what you learn in a practical manner.

. Make it fun; learning should be enjoyable.
