Quiet down at sea

2017-06-06 06:01

Each year the Navy welcomes the start of the official whale season – June to November – with gunfire.

Surely this must affect the occurrence of whales, especially in the coastal area around Simon’s Town.

For this season I have seen whales off Muizenberg and Strandfontein/ Seal Island, hopefully an indication of a good whale-sighting season.

We are fortunate to have these whales visit our shores. We should welcome these mammals, not scare them away.

Hopefully the Navy will take cognisance of this issue.
