“The only real hope for the vulnerable youth in these communities struggling with poverty, gangsterism, drugs and crime lies in completing their education and becoming employable, productive members of society.”

These were the words of Adekunle Oyewo, principal of School of Hope special needs secondary in Observatory, speaking during a cheque handover of R60 000 from KFC’s Add Hope campaign late last month. Oyewo said the donation will go towards the school’s feeding scheme.

Most of the school’s 145 learners come from less-privileged homes. The school offers support groups for parents, involving them in learning interventions specific to their child’s needs.

The school has been partnering with Add Hope since 2016.

School programme manager, Laura Collura, adds that the nutrition programme at the school is one of the most important contributors to academic success.

“It gives the learners a chance to focus on their schoolwork throughout the day while their physical needs are taken care of through good nutrition. It is about more than the food – it is about learners feeling cared for in the family-like environment.

“The enthusiasm of the learners was so genuine and heartfelt on the day of the handover. It was so beautiful to see them getting a chance to thank our benefactors in person with such excitement and genuine joy. Thank you to everyone who contributes to Add Hope,” she says.

Thabisa Mkhwanazi, KFC public affairs director for Africa and Add Hope champion, says they are pleased to be working with their customers to help the communities around Observatory and other vulnerable communities throughout South Africa.
