After briefly appearing in court battered and bruised, a 49-year-old man accused of raping a five-year-old girl, remains in custody.

He appeared in court on Wednesday last week.

He had allegedly been beaten up by other inmates while in the holding cells.

He sustained injuries to his ribs, arm and face.

The man was arrested on Sunday after being pointed out by the five-year-old girl for allegedly raping her.

It is believed the man was raping her in the bush near Kapteinsklip station when he was spotted by a passerby.

The City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement spokesperson, Wayne Dyason, says members of the City’s transport enforcement unit were on duty in the area when residents informed them of the rape.

“The members went to investigate but the 49-year-old suspect had fled the scene,” he says in a statement.

“They took the victim to Mitchell’s Plain Police Station where the brave young girl informed the police officers she knew the suspect and showed them where he lived in Tafelsig.”

Police later arrested the man.

The girl is receiving medical treatment.

The case has been postponed to Wednesday 30 August.
